Tired of those droopy lids? Perhaps it’s time to consider cosmetic blepharoplasty. But, before you commit to getting that eyelid "lift" there are some important facts to consider that can make a big difference in your overall appearance following surgery.
The goal of cosmetic blepharoplasty is to recontour the eyelid in such a fashion as to restore a more youthful configuration. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty usually involves removal and recontouring of skin, muscle, and orbital fat while lower eyelid blepharoplasty usually involves recontouring of lower eyelid fat, skin rejuvenation and possibly resection of skin and muscle. Standard surgical instrumentation or laser-assisted techniques are commonly used but the bottom line is that the overall outcome is the same with either method. The method that the surgeon is most experienced and comfortable with is what is important.
Cosmetic blepharoplasty is a relatively quick (about 30 minutes in most cases) and virtually painless procedure performed in an out-patient setting. Post-operative recovery time is normally about one week. For the best results, it is important to select a surgeon with the experience and understanding of the intricate eyelid anatomy. Removal of too much tissue can create a condition called lagophthalmos (inability to close the eyelids fully) which can cause severe dry eye problems and, possibly, lead to eye infections. Removal of too little tissue will result in a poor cosmetic outcome. So, when you’re ready to lose those "baggy" eyelids, make the right choice!
