The Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure granted $3.013 million to not-for-profits in the Denver and the surrounding communities at its April 10 Hope for the Cure Celebration. Last year’s record $2.7+ million rose to $3.013 this year, with 2007’s 29 grants rising to 35. The Celebration event honored breast cancer projects serving uninsured and underinsured individuals throughout a 12-county service area and statewide service providers. The Komen Denver Affiliate also invested more than $1 million to international and national breast cancer research through Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program. The Affiliate’s service area includes Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Park and Summit counties. In addition to this major funding, the Affiliate awards small grants throughout the year.
“Continually increasing participation in our major fundraising events, the annual Komen Denver Race for the Cure® and A Pink Tie Affair®, plus other assistance, has made expanding the range of our grants possible,” said Marilyn Saltzman, president of the Denver Affiliate. Third party events naming Komen as a beneficiary, sponsorships, cash contributions, matching funds and donations of in-kind goods and services add to the funds generated by these signature events.
The Denver Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure raises awareness of breast cancer and breast health as well as money for breast health and breast cancer programs. The Denver Affiliate is a grant-making organization and as such does not fund breast health services directly. Through a well-established and rigorous grants process, the Affiliate grants the money it raises to other not-for-profits which provide education, screening, treatment and treatment support to the community at-large. One service funded are projects providing “navigation” to help women diagnosed with breast cancer find the appropriate resources and services to “navigate” the complex health care system. Many provide screening mammograms for low-income women who otherwise would not get them. “We believe that education and early diagnosis, which we fund, have been key elements in improved survival rate,” Saltzman added. Twenty-five years ago, when breast cancer was diagnosed before it spread, the five-year survival rate was just 74 percent. Today, it is 98 percent. Nearly 75 percent of women over the age of 40 now receive regular mammograms compared to just 30 percent in 1982.

About the Denver Metropolitan Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure About Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, it has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
